There is no shortage of classic looking slots with a fiery theme and fruit symbols, and NetEnt adds another one to the pile with Let It Burn. This is no ordinary fruit machine, however, as it plays out on a 5x4 grid with 1,024 ways to win. The presentation is still about as generic as it gets, but we know that some players get a nostalgic kick out of this presentation. The lack of originality in the visual department is duly compensated for feature-wise, however.

NetEnt has come up with a somewhat original twist called the Rolling Reels feature, and only the 3 middle reels are “rolling” here. This is also how you increase the progressive multiplier per reel, and 4 different wild symbols can interfere in different ways to move the rolling reels or increase the multiplier further. The classic fruit machine inspired pay symbols come with the lucky number 7 as the highest paying symbol, and you can also land stacks of wilds. The core function of the wild symbols is to step in for pay symbols to help complete and/or improve wins, but as we shall see below, the wilds come with some modifier action as well.You get Rolling Reels individually on reels 2, 3, and 4, and the rolling reel multiplier starts at x1.

The rolling reels will eventually drop off the grid at the lowest possible point, unless a moving wild comes to the rescue. Rolling Reels will wait for you after the bonus round is finished, but they are not carried over into the feature.

The Rolling Reels feature can be further enhanced by 4 different wild symbol modifiers, and these are as follows:

• Wild +3 - adds +3 to the rolling reel’s multiplier.
• Wild Up - returns the rolling reel to the highest position.
• Wild Left - moves the rolling reel left instead of down.
• Wild Right - moves the rolling reel right instead of down.

Rolling Reels can move to the same position, and this means that they merge to become one. The respective rolling reels multiplier values will then be added together for the merged reel.

You need 3, 4, or 5 scatters in view to trigger the Bonus Round, and this awards 10, 15, or 20 free spins, respectively. You win 3, 5, 8, or 12 extra spins during the feature, if you land 2, 3, 4, or 5 scatters on the same free spin.

It’s clear by now that the NetEnt that used to be some years ago will probably never return. They have turned into what used to be Microgaming (now Games Global), and by that we mean that they seldom release new slots of their own, and when they do it’s often a less than memorable game. Let It Burn comes with the classic fiery fruit slot theme which will probably never die, and it looks about as generic as it gets. This is not the NetEnt we once knew, that is for sure, but things happen when companies swallow other companies.

The Rolling Reels Multiplier system is admittedly innovative and original, not least with the different wild modifiers doing their thing as well. It keeps the base game somewhat interesting, and the bonus round is made more lucrative by piling on an additional row that increases the number of win ways. The 2,700x potential is not very impressive in this day and age though, and especially not for a high volatility installment. We’re unsure if NetEnt is aware of the irony in the title ‘Let It Burn’, but as veteran players who remember their glory days, we certainly do.
