Monsters Unchained Review

To paraphrase Dave Sim; ‘Anything done for the first time unleashes a monster’. You will do a lot of that in Red Tiger’s Monsters Unchained, as the title more than indicates, and the 3 monsters you get to meet in this game are borrowed from Greek mythology. The Minotaur is half man half bull, and lurked in a labyrinth to kill people. Medusa with her snake hair was so hideous that she turned men to stone, while Cerberus is the multi-headed dog of the underworld.

Each monster comes with a unique modifier in this game, and collecting chain breaker symbols unleashes these modifiers in 10 spin cycles. Each modifier comes with 3 tiers, and they expand the grid, add random wilds, and award a win multiplier. The monster modifiers are persistent when unleashed in the bonus round, and you don’t need to wait for the 10th spin to unleash them there. The 10,500x potential is higher than usual from this developer, and Monsters Unleashed is a pretty solid effort overall.

Monsters Unchained Slot Features

The premium symbols pay between 1 and 3 x your stake for 5 of a kind wins, and Wild symbols step in for any pay symbol to help complete and/or improve wins.

Monsters Unchained Slot Gameplay

Wilds cannot land organically, however, and they will only appear via the Medusa modifier we’ll take a look at below.

The base game plays out in 10 spins cycles, and Chain Breaker symbols are collected in the respective Monster Meters seen on the left-hand side of the grid. This goes on in the first 9 spins of the cycle, and each monster meter comes with 3 tiers. Tier 1 breaks the monster’s chain, and all unchained monsters will unleash their modifier on the 10th spin in each cycle. If you unlock more tiers the monster’s feature will be enhanced, and everything resets after the 10th spin in each cycle.

There are 3 different Chain Breaker symbols corresponding to the 3 different monsters, and they come in red, green, and blue colors.

Monsters Unchained Slot Gameplay 2

You can only land 1 Chain Breaker symbol on any given spin in the cycle, however, and they don’t appear on the 10th spin. Below is an overview of the monster features that can be unleashed:

  • Minotaur (red chain breaker symbols) - expands the grid to 5x4, 5x5, or 6x5 with 1,024, 3,125, or 15,625 win ways from 1, 2, or 3 broken chains, respectively.
  • Medusa (green chain breaker symbols) - adds 2-3, 4-5, or 6-7 wild symbols to the grid for 1, 2, or 3 broken chains, respectively. The wilds cannot appear on the first or last reels, no matter what size the grid is.
  • Cerberus (blue chain breaker symbols) - awards a win multiplier of x2-x3, x4-x5, or x6-x7 for 1, 2, or 3 broken chains, respectively.

The Monster Spins Bonus Round triggers from 3 monster scatters on reels 1, 3, and 5, and this gives you 10 free spins. Scatter symbols cannot appear on the 10th spin in any base game cycle, however, and they also will not land in the bonus round. Broken monster chains are not carried over into the feature either.

Whenever you break a monster chain in the bonus round, the modifier triggers on the next free spin. Both the win multiplier and the reel expansion modifiers are persistent for the duration of the bonus round, and the Medusa feature adds a random amount of wilds to random positions per spin as well. You win +3 extra spins if you break all 3 monster chains, which means that up to 19 extra spins can be won.

Review Summary

All 3 monsters in this game are borrowed from Greek mythology, and Red Tiger has done a good job incorporating them into the gameplay. The visuals are solid as usual from this developer, and the base game builds up to the climactic 10th spin each cycle.

Monsters Unchained Slot Gameplay 850

Many games unleash nothing but wilds in similar cycles, but in Monsters Unchained you can expand the grid up to 5x6, get up to 7 wilds, as well as an x7 win multiplier - all at the same time every 10 spins.

You will seldom get all 3 monster modifiers unleashed, of course, but it’s always exciting to see what happens every 10th spin in the base game. Everything is enhanced in the bonus round, as is usually the case, when all 3 monster features are persistent when unleashed. The 10,500x potential is solid as well, and Monsters Unchained is an enjoyable and well-balanced game that has put the spin cycle concept to good use. It is a volatile game, however, so you need to be mentally prepared to handle fluctuations on your bankroll.

Pros

  • Up to 3 monster modifiers on every 10 spins
  • FS w/ persistent unleashed monster modifiers
  • Win up to 10,500x your stake
