The original Rocky movie is one of the most iconic sports/boxing movies of all time, and Stallone wrote the screenplay in only 3 days after watching Muhammad Ali duke it out with Chuck Wepner. It grossed 225x the $1M budget it was made on, and won 3 Academy Awards. Needless to say, Rocky catapulted Sylvester Stallone into A-list stardom, and 5 follow-up movies were produced (the latest one, Rocky Balboa, was released in 2006).

Rarestone Gaming has clearly decided to go to town with their license, as they have basically rolled all 6 movies into one and the same game. Rocky comes with plenty of movie clips and soundbites, and Ivan Drago, Clubber Lang, and Apollo Creed are the main opponents. Each movie in the franchise gets its own bonus round or feature, and you can win up to a solid 5,000x your stake. This one is well worth checking out for the nostalgia alone, and it’s also one to try if you like plenty of different features.

There are 6 different scatter symbols in this game, and these all represent different movies in the franchise. You get Rocky I, Rocky II, Rocky III, Rocky IV, Rocky V, and Rocky RB scatters, and they appear only in the corner positions. The Ivan Drago Hold & Respin bonus triggers from 4 Rocky IV scatters, and you start with 3 respins. American and Russian flag gloves, as well as blanks, appear on the grid, and the respins tally resets to 3 each time you land at least one glove. The feature ends when you run out of respins, or when you fill the grid. Each glove awards a cash prize in the end.

Review Summary

There is more than enough nostalgia packed into this game, and it was good fun to be reunited with iconic moments from each of the 6 Rocky movies. Rolling everything into one game, as opposed to rolling out one installment after another, is probably the way to go, as it makes this more of a definitive branded Rocky release. The retro presentation goes well together with this theme, but you don’t get to see too much actual fighting.

It would have been fun to see a real animated fight as at least one of the bonus rounds, and some of them come across as a tad primitive. You get plenty of movie clips and soundbites though, which helps, and we can imagine that obtaining the branded license swallowed a large chunk of the budget for this game. Overall, we had a good time with the slot version of Rocky, but more due to nostalgia than “super impressive” features.
