After the highly enjoyable and solid ‘book slot’ debut, Book of Truth, we’ve been wondering how TrueLab would approach the follow-up release. Crypts of Fortune comes with the same Adventurer, who still finds himself in Egypt with the pyramids in the background. The math model has been watered down a bit though, with a somewhat lower default RTP and a 10,000x potential. The latter is still a lot higher than most Book slots however, so no complaints really.

The way you trigger the 2 bonus rounds is different from most similar games too, as both features come about from collecting Akhenaten and Nefertiti scatter/wilds in the base game grind. This gives you a sense of direction and purpose, and it certainly helps motivate you to keep going. You get to choose your own expanding symbol in the first feature, while the latter comes with an extra expanding symbol per retrigger.

The Akhenaten and Nefertiti symbols are both wild and scatters in this game, and as wilds the symbols step in for all regular pay symbols to help complete winning combinations. These symbols pay up to 500x your stake, while the regular premium symbols pay between 60 and 500 x your stake for 5 of a kind wins.

There are 2 different Bonus Rounds available, and these are triggered by collecting scatter/wilds in their respective meters on either side of the reels.

You need to collect 14 Akhenaten scatters to trigger the corresponding feature, and this awards 10 free spins. You get to choose the special expanding symbol in this feature, and it expands and pays if you land enough instances of it on different reels to generate a win.

That would be 2-5 instances if you choose a premium symbol, and 3-5 instances if you choose a royal symbol. The special symbol doesn’t need to land on adjacent reels to pay. The Nefertiti Bonus Round is triggered when you collect 14 Nefertiti scatters, and you get 10 free spins also in this feature. A symbol is chosen randomly up front to be the expanding ‘scatter pay’ symbol, and a new expanding symbol is chosen per retrigger.

Review Summary

The pace of the game is okay with the turbo switched on, but it feels more like regular speed than “fast play”. The base game is pretty uneventful as is usually the case with ‘Book slots’, but the way you trigger the bonus rounds boosts morale as you grind along. It feels nice to not be at the mercy of random 3+ scatters to land, but instead you’re gradually working your way towards the big highlights.

The Akhenaten scatters seemed to land more often than Nefertiti scatters, which makes sense if you consider which feature is potentially most valuable. We don’t mind really, as it’s fun choosing your own special expanding symbol. Having more than one expanding symbol is potentially more lucrative though, and probably your best shot at cracking the solid 10,000x potential.
