Rome The Conquerors Review

Peter & Sons (best developer name ever) has clearly understood the importance of brand recognition, and their distinct visual style hardly goes unnoticed. As refreshing as their games are when it comes to the graphical side of things, they still have things to prove in the features department. Rome The Conquerors is not really a step forward in that regard, but it’s still a decent enough game with a pretty solid math model (at least on paper).

The arrogant looking Caesar is the highest value symbol. However, it’s no wonder a frawn has permanently settled on his face, as his value has been set to only 3.5x. Of course, the 1,024 win ways can lead to larger payouts in theory, not least combined with an okay wild multiplier, but in practice the base game feels impotent and somewhat tedious. The bonus round attempts to take it up a notch or three, but you’re hard pressed to get anywhere without reaching higher tiers.

The Signum wild can land on the 3 middle reels only, and it will step in for any regular pay symbol. Whenever a wild is part of a winning combo, the Roman commander on the left-hand side will raise his Signum to reveal a random multiplier of either 1x, 2x or 3x.

The Crossed Swords scatter can land on reels 1 and 5 only, and when you land 1 on each reel on the same spin you trigger the Bonus Round.

You start with 5 free spins, and the reel set expands from 5x4 to 5x5, increasing the number of win ways from 1,024 to 3,125.

Below the reels you’ll see 4 treasure chests, and these come with 2, 2, 3 and 4 locks in chronological order. The first chest is cut open by the scatter blades, and this is how you get the first 5 free spins. You need 2 new scatters to open the second chest, and each chest you open awards 5 new free spins. Each chest you open also increases the random wild multiplier range as follows:

  • Chest tier 1 - comes with a random wild multiplier of 1x, 2x or 3x.
  • Chest tier 2 - comes with a random wild multiplier of 2x, 4x or 6x.
  • Chest tier 3 - comes with a random wild multiplier of 3x, 5x or 8x.
  • Chest tier 4 - comes with a random wild multiplier of 7x, 10x or 15x.

When you have triggered the bonus round 5 times, you will unlock the Super Free Spins feature next time you land 2 scatters on reels 1 and 5. Now, the reel set expands to 5x6, which again increases the number of win ways to 7,776.

Everything else is the same as in the regular bonus round.

The 200 Spins Rome The Conquerors Slot Experience

We did get some minor wild multiplier wins in the base game, but usually the Centurion displayed a 1x multiplier on his signum. You can safely skip ahead to the bonus round, which starts at 0:28 into the 2-minute highlights video. We managed to open the second tier treasure chest, and you can see how much (or how little) we got away with by hitting the play button.

Review Summary

The unique visual style of Peter & Sons (and the brand name itself) was enough to quickly put them on the map when they first arrived. However, once you’ve gotten somewhat used to the quirky cartoonish graphics, the core gaming experience itself is what remains. Rome The Conquerors is certainly refreshing compared to all the “dead serious” roman empire slots out there, but the gameplay comes across as a bit stale.

The low symbol value combined with the mostly 1x wild multiplier wins in the base game contributes to this feeling. Also, the bonus round can be over in a blink unless you manage to open at least the second-tier chest. Further, you really need the 4-tier wild multipliers to truly make a dent, and it’s far from easy to get there. The Super Spins round might have more win ways, but the above element of frustration still applies.
