The original Raptor DoubleMax is one of those games that it’s hard to forget, and the same cannot be said about several of the follow-ups that have since been released. Pharaoh's Gaze DoubleMax is an overall decent attempt by Bang Bang Games, but we liked their pirate-themed Shadow Raiders MultiMax even better. Anyway, you get colorful ancient Egypt visuals in this release, and anything can happen with a multiplier that doubles per dropdown win.

You will seldom see the doubling multiplier go very far in the base game though, but wilds spawn to help you out as best they can per dropdown win. In addition, you’ll collect gems per reel to occasionally get between 1 and 3 wilds, and 3 wilds fills the whole reel. Of course, the doubling multiplier never resets in the bonus round, and you also get extra gems before the feature starts. The 15,000x potential is solid, but still below many other installments in this range.

The premium symbols pay between 2 and 5 x your stake for 5 of a kind wins, and you can land Wild symbols on all 5 reels as well. The wilds step in for pay symbols to help complete or improve wins, but they cannot substitute for the scatter symbol.

Winning symbols are removed via the Dropdown mechanic, and replaced by, you guessed it, new and/or existing symbols dropping down from above.

A wild appears in a random empty position before the rest of the symbols drop down each time, and the feature goes on as long as you keep winning. Also, the DoubleMax feature doubles the win multiplier per dropdown, and everything resets after a non-winning drop in the base game.

You will see a Pharaoh Head above each reel, and these come with 3 empty slots each. Random symbols land with mini pharaoh gems attached, and these are collected by the Pharaoh Head on the same reel. When all 3 slots are filled the reel becomes highlighted for the spin and dropdown sequence that follows, and 1 to 3 wilds are spawned on highlighted reels per dropdown.

You need at least 3 golden jeweled scarab scatters in view to trigger the Scarab Bonus Round, and it comes with 7 free spins. All collected Pharaoh Gems are carried over, and you also get 6 gems randomly assigned to empty collection slots before the bonus round plays out.

The DoubleMax multiplier never resets for as long as the feature lasts, but everything resets when you return to the base game.

The Bonus Buy menu is available in some jurisdictions, but not in the UK for sure. If eligible, you can purchase 7 free spins for 100x your stake. You can also gamble for more free spins when you buy the bonus round, possibly increasing the number of spins to 10 and 13. You risk losing the whole feature if you gamble, which is good to know.

Review Summary

The whole DoubleMax concept hasn’t really taken off as much as we thought it would when the original Raptor Doublemax dropped. It’s still the best installment in the series, and there have been a few duds along the way. Pharaoh's Gaze DoubleMax comes with familiar ancient Egypt visuals, albeit done in a colorful style that makes it stick out a bit from the herd.

The pace of the game is okay, but there are some hiccups here and there.

What makes this installment special is the Pharaoh’s Gaze feature, which can fill whole reels with wilds when it triggers. This helps you out in the base game, and even more so when the bonus round triggers. The doubling multiplier can reach impressive levels when it never resets, but it will not necessarily lead to massive payouts. Up to 15,000x your stake is possible, which is respectable, but still lower than other installments in this series. Overall, a decent follow-up, but we still prefer the original.
