Danger Zone Review

Get ready to enter the Danger Zone, and blast your way through a highly explosive new video slot from Booming Games in the mining genre. This is a popular theme for sure, not least because the destiny of a prospector striking gold is very analogous to the punter trying his luck on online slots. It’s a daily grind until you suddenly hit pay dirt, and that can certainly happen here with a bit of luck. High volatility is the name of the game, but the bonus round has the potential for a very decent payday for the somewhat patient punter.

The TNT detonator stands on the ready by your left-hand side all the way, and it will spring into life whenever the Bursting Major Dynamite feature is triggered. It comes on like an earthquake, shaking loose rocks falling from above, and you’ll see sticks of TNT start showing up and become sticky on the reels whenever this happens. All the dynamite will explode simultaneously, and turn a random number of surrounding symbols into wilds. You will also benefit from a regular wild symbol in Danger Zone slot, but it’s in no way a feature heavy title from Booming Games this time.

It all plays out in the main entrance of the mine, with gold nuggets and gemstones as the higher value symbols, and you’ll benefit from 6 reels, 4 rows and 25 ways to win here. The bonus round takes you deep into the shaft, and now the dynamite symbols can also produce tons of wilds. You can win up to 2,000x your stake here, which admittedly is a bit below what is to be expected from this kind of volatility. However, we had no problem staying afloat in our 200 spins test session, and we definitely enjoyed ourselves and saw the potential in this honky-tonk style “diamond in the rough”.

What are the bonus features?

Simplicity is the name of the game here, but you do have some interesting wild features that can benefit you in the base game, and not least during the all-important bonus round. We’ll start with the simplest bonus features first, and work our way up the food chain.

First of all, the red “stop sign” is the regular wild symbol in this game, and it pays 80x your stake when you land 6 on a payline. It will step in for all regular symbols, and thus help you form winning combinations in the base game and during the free spins feature.

One of the first things you’ll notice in this game is the TNT detonator on the left-hand side of the reels.

This is not only for show, as you can land so-called Bursting Major Dynamite symbols at any given spin here. This feature is triggered at random times in the base game, and you’ll see a bunch of dynamite sticks randomly distributed across the reels.

The TNT detonator will then be pressed down as if operated by an invisible man, and all the dynamites on the reels explode at the same time. Each stick of dynamite will turn into identical premium symbols, and the explosion can also do the same to up to 8 surrounding symbols per dynamite. It’s kind of like a Mystery symbol feature in other words, and it can help you land bigger base game wins.

Free spins in Danger Zone

You trigger the free spins bonus round by landing 3 of the Jolly Roger scatter symbols anywhere on the same spins. This gives you 8 free spins, and there is, unfortunately, no way to retrigger the bonus round or get extra spins. You will benefit from the Bursting Major Dynamite feature also during the free spins round, but there is something even more lucrative that can be activated here.

How to play

The game interface is a bit unusual in Danger Zone slot, but experienced players will have no problem figuring things out in no-time. We’ll still go through everything you need to know here, and especially beginners and new players should probably pay attention.

First of all, you can actually click on each symbol on the reels here, and this brings up a small tab with all the different combination values from 3 to 6 on a payline.

This is not something you see too often, and it’s actually a very good idea. The highest value symbol in this game is the “stop sign” wild, and the regular symbols are divided into Major and Minor symbols in the paytable.

Game workflow

You find the paytable by clicking the “i” button above the spin button, and you’ll see the symbol values change according to your chosen bet level. The gold nugget is the highest value regular symbol, and you can also read briefly about the different bonus features here. The other tab takes you to the game rules, where all formal info is presented together with more details about each button, feature and function in the game.

Click the “x” next to the spin button to open up a game settings menu. Here you can turn on Fast play via the lightning icon, choose 50 autospins and turn on/off the game sound effects and/or the cheerful background music. Via the coin stack icon (or the arrows down to the left) you can choose your total stake per spin between 25p and £250.

If you don’t feel like spinning the reels manually, you can access a more elaborate autoplay feature via the circular arrow icon in the hamburger menu.

Here you can choose between 10 and 1,000 autospins, or even set the autoplay to go on “forever”. You can also stop the autospins on any win, when the bonus round is triggered or if a win exceeds a chosen value.

The 200 Spins Danger Zone Experience

We tend to like mining themed slots, and we enjoyed the cheerful honky-tonk vibe Danger Zone projected immediately. Whistling along with the joyful tune, we loaded up the autoplay feature with 250 autospins, and adjusted the bet level to £1.25, which, unfortunately, is the closest you can get to betting £1 per spin (unless you prefer 75p, that is).

The reels rattle along at a decent pace with the fast play option turned on, and if you hold down the space bar you’ll get lightning fast gameplay. The problem is that this is not possible with autospins, so with that option you have to wait those annoying seconds every time a minute base game win is summed up.

We went for “old school” manual spins after a while for this reason, and after around 50 spins we triggered the bonus round for the first time. It went along fast, and we had only 1 successful Bursting Wild feature that landed us a 16x our stake win. This became our total win for the whole bonus round, as all the other 7 spins were as dead as a doornail.

Win

We hardly won a single significant win without the Bursting Major Dynamite feature, but the good news is that it triggers quite often. At most we won 5x our stake without it, and we got 4 Bursting Major features almost in a row right after the disappointing free spins feature. Perhaps the game was compensating us, cause we landed wins between 16x and 32x each time.

After 150 spins or so, we triggered the free spins round yet again. This time we got a lot more action, and the Bursting Major feature triggered a whopping 4 times on 8 spins. The most memorable moment was when we almost filled the screen with gold nuggets, and this landed us a solid win of 112x our stake.

All in all, we got away with 154.50x our stake from this bonus round, which is decent, and we had a 15x Bursting Major win in the base game right after also. This left us with a nice little profit after our 200 spins test run ended, and we definitely enjoyed our little session, even though the game has its faults and weaknesses.

Review Summary

The most refreshing thing about this little “gold nugget in the rough” is that it does not pretend to be anything more than it is. There’s a charming happy-go-lucky vibe oozing out of this game, and we only wish the max win potential had matched the volatility level a bit more. Winning up to 2,000x your stake is not all that bad, but a 2x win multiplier during the bonus round would have made the whole thing more attractive.

The base game also feels a bit lacking, and would perhaps have benefitted from a cascading reels mechanic. It’s always a bit exciting when the Bursting Major Dynamite feature is triggered, but the novelty will wear off in the long run. The bonus round feels like a highlight for sure, but you are not guaranteed a bigger win in any way when you trigger it.

Pros

  • Random symbol transformation feature
  • Free spins with symbol wild transformation
  • High volatility and 2,000x max win potential

Cons

  • RTP of 95.12 % is below the industry average

If you enjoy lots of explosions and gritty action, then mining games are probably right up your alley. Luckily, there is no shortage of solid prospector and gold/gemstone mining slots out there, and we’ll recommend a few here you can check out if you want. Simply follow the link, and you can read all about these games, and also play the free demo version.

Gold Digger - comes with a toothless old chap manning the TNT detonator, and iSoftBet has made a solid prospector game here for sure. There are 3 bonus features handed out at random times in this game, and the old prospector is involved in all of them. The Gold Link Re/Free Spins feature is the game’s big highlight, and you can win up to 8,230x your stake in this shaky mine shaft.

TNT Tumble - is one of our all time favorite mining slots, and it takes you deep into a mineshaft where drilling wilds wreak havoc on the reels. The game starts out above ground however, but in the underground bonus round you’ll see plenty of chain reaction wins with a 12,278x max win potential always looming on the horizon, waiting for the day you finally hit pay dirt.
