Toshi Video Club Review

Hacksaw Gaming does the minimalistic visual style better than most developers, and their skills in that department is definitely on display in Toshi Video Club. Using mostly a black and white color scheme, the premium symbols are brightened by a Rising Sun Flag-inspired orange. The theme pays homage to the dawn of video gaming as it started in Japan, and this adds a nostalgic tint that many players will probably enjoy.

As for the gameplay itself, it’s not the most original release to come out of Hacksaw’s creative Pocketz Series, and those familiar with previous installments will recognize the blueprint. Basically, you’ll land 4 special Daruma mystery multiplier symbols, and these add to, or multiply, the current global win multiplier. Everything resets between spins in the base game, but not in the bonus round, and this can lead to solid payouts up to 10,000x your stake.

Gorilla wilds can land anywhere, and these step in for all regular pay symbols to help you form winning combinations. Wilds are also the most valuable symbol in the game in its own right, awarding 40x your stake for 5 on a payline. The orange-tinted premiums pay between 10x and 20x for 5-oak in comparison.

The Cascading Wins mechanic removes all winning symbols from the grid, and new and/or existing symbols drop down to fill the gaps.

This process will repeat as long as you keep winning, and special Daruma symbols can land at any time to increase the global win multiplier you can see right above the reels.

There are 4 types of Daruma mystery multiplier symbols, and whatever multiplier you rack up will boost all wins. The multiplier resets between paid spins however, and here is an overview of the 4 Daruma symbols and their respective effect on the global win multiplier:

  • Small Daruma - adds +1, +2 or +5 to the multiplier.
  • Medium Daruma - adds +10, +15 or +20 to the multiplier.
  • Big Daruma - adds +25, +50 or +100 to the multiplier.
  • Green Daruma - multiplies the current multiplier by x2, x3, x4 or x5.

The Bonus Round is triggered by landing 3 scatters anywhere in sight, and this awards 10 free spins. The feature plays out very similar to the base game, but with the crucial difference that the global win multiplier does not reset between free spins. Non-UK players can purchase the bonus round for 120x the total stake (increases the RTP from 96.17 % to 96.24 %).

The 200 Spins Toshi Video Club Experience

The base game was not very eventful for us, so we decided to purchase the bonus round after a little while. The feature is triggered at 0:50 into the 2 and a half minute highlights video, and you can see for yourself how we fared by hitting the play button below.

Review Summary

As much as we love the visual style Hacksaw comes up with in Toshi Video Club, the gameplay does get a bit tedious after a while.

Toshi Video Club Slot Gameplay 3

There is very little happening in the base game, and you’ll watch tons of dead spins between occasional top-up wins that many times are not all that impressive even if a decent multiplier is involved.

That’s the nature of a volatile game like this, and even the bonus round is far from a big win guarantee. The latter can produce impressive results when things go your way however, to the tune of 10,000x your stake. Tense moments will typically come towards the end of the feature, once a solid multiplier has been racked up. However, it’s disappointing when a solid multiplier goes to waste with no winning combos in sight, and the whole thing fizzles out with a whimper instead of a bang.

Pros

  • 4 symbols to increase multiplier
  • FS w/ non-resetting multiplier
  • Win up to 10,000x your stake

Cons

  • Too volatile for casual players
