It certainly feels like a lot more because of all the Book of copycats out there, but Play’n Go themselves haven’t - as far as we can gather - released more than 12 ‘Book of’ mechanic slots, including this one. If you’re looking for something revolutionary, Secret of Dead is not it. This release basically combines elements from 2 previous Play’n Go installments, namely Scroll of Dead and Legacy of Dead.

You get a 6th reel bolted on in all stages of the game this time, not only in the bonus round, but you’re still dealing with 10 paylines. As in Legacy of Dead, each bonus round retrigger gives you another chosen expanding symbol. However, the top-tier Shai (Egyptian goddess of fate) symbol is worth 2x as much in the bonus round, leaving you with a solid 10,000x single spin potential (which also happens to be the game’s win cap).

The royal symbols pay up to 25x your stake for 6 of a kind wins, while the premiums pay between 100 and 500 x your stake for the same. The Ankh symbol replaces the usual Book symbol, and it serves double duty as both wild and scatter. As a wild, the Ankh steps in for all regular pay symbols to help complete winning combos, and it holds no value of its own.

Landing 3, 4, 5 or 6 Ankh scatters at the same time awards a scatter win of 1x, 10x, 50x or 250x your stake, respectively, and it also triggers the Bonus Round with 8, 10, 12 or 15 free spins, respectively.

A pay symbol is selected randomly before the free spins start, and it becomes the special Expanding Symbol during the feature.

doesn’t take much of a tweak to merit a brand new ‘Book slot’ release these days, not even from the inventors of the infamous Book of Dead themselves. Play'n Go has basically incorporated the 6th bonus round reel from the previous Scroll of Dead also into the base game in this installment, and in addition, Secret of Dead gives you the extra expanding symbol per bonus round retrigger that was first seen in Legacy of Dead.

We’re getting a bit tired of the ancient Egypt theme at this point, and we wouldn’t mind a brand new and more experimental direction for this series. We understand that Play’n Go can easily milk it for all its worth by doing what they are doing though, and connoisseurs will probably not mind yet another variant. The 10,000x potential, which is twice the usual ‘Book’ max win, makes this a somewhat tempting prospect for all players, but there are more exciting Ra clones out there in our humble opinion.
