Cats are known to duke it out from time to time, making nasty growling sounds as they stare each other down in a Mexican stand-off fashion. We haven’t really seen them band together in Scottish-style clans too much though, but that’s the somewhat cute and hilarious premise in Snowborn’s cartoonish Cat Clans. The visual style sticks out from most of their previous releases, and the budding Microgaming partner is clearly still looking for “their voice”.

There’s a lot to like in this medieval-inspired installment, and even the base game can dish out solid payouts due to the multiplying multiplier wilds. Overlay Golden Paws are collected to trigger the Clan Battle bonus prize feature at random times, and the Cat-a-pult bonus round comes with sticky wilds that are upgraded with increasing multipliers per spin. The 20,000x overall potential is solid, and this is the best effort we’ve seen from Snowborn thus far.

The cat premiums pay 10 to 12.5 x your stake for 5 of a kind wins, and you can land wilds anywhere to help complete winning combinations. The wilds pay up to 111x your stake for 5-oak wins, and they also come with multipliers between x1 and x5 attached. The wild multipliers are multiplied with each other if more than one multiplier wild is involved in a win.

The Cat-a-pult Free Spins round is triggered when you land 3 scatters on reels 1, 3 and 5, and this awards an up front scatter win of 1.5x your stake.

You get 3 free spins for starters, and each new wild symbol that lands reset the tally to 3 again. Wilds also become sticky for the duration of the feature, and the catapult will fire at one of the sticky wilds per spin to upgrade its multiplier by +1. Each wild can thus be upgraded to an x9 multiplier wild at the most.

The Golden Paw symbols that sometimes overlay premium symbols are collected in the treasure chest on the left-hand side. This may trigger the Clan Battle Bonus Game at random times, and the 4 cat premiums, Clan Mac Cattus, Clan Mac Whiskers, Clan Mac Feline and Clan Mac Tabby, are then upgraded with a prize between 10 and 10,000 x your stake.

You then get 5 free spins, and you win the prize from the cat that lands the most during those rounds. If it’s a draw between 2 or more symbols, you get indefinite extra spins until a winner is singled out.

The Clan Battle Bonus is not available in the bonus buy menu, but you can purr-chase (bad pun, we know) the Cat-a-pult bonus round for 50x your stake (not for UK players).

Snowborn is experimenting with different visual styles per release it seems, and Cat Clans’ quirky cartoonish presentation goes well together with the charming feline Scottish clans theme. It’s mostly about the 2 bonus features, and both can dish out impressive payouts on a good day. The Clan Battle round can be quite a thrill-ride if you’re closing in on a larger prize, and up to 10,000x your stake is the most you can hope for in this feature.

The Cat-a-pult bonus round comes with a 20,000x potential however, and it’s always enjoyable to see a random wild multiplier be upgraded per spin. This is a tried and tested formula that’s done with a little twist in this game, and it can be highly effective when the war gods are on your side. Overall, this is a very pretty solid effort from Snowborn, and it might help ‘cat-a-pult’ them into the mainstream.
