Wolf Howl Review

Just for the Win has not lost the ability to surprise it seems, and this young buck is still eager to prove itself in an ever-crowded marketplace of new games. Wolf Howl took us quite by surprise, and we had to check twice if this game really came from Microgaming partner JFTW. The impressive 25,000x potential was just too far from what we usually see from this upcoming developer, and the game also looked surprisingly classical and generic in its visual presentation. In fact, it looked almost dated, which we assume has been done to add nostalgic value.

This is not really a game for people who want bells and whistles, but the math model offers rock solid hardcore volatilty gameplay with the potential for massive rewards. The base game has its moments due to the multiplying multiplier wilds, but it’s the bonus round you’re really looking forward to here. You will land plenty of moon scatters during the free spins round, and these will not only add extra spins to your tally, but also transform all surrounding symbols into upgradable multiplier wilds for the duration of the feature.

The game plays out on 5 reels, 3 rows and 10 ways to win, and you can place bets between 10p and £10 per spin across all platforms and handheld devices. The reels are set in a winter forest lit up by what we assume is the setting sun, and the hit frequency of 22.46 % means you can expect something to happen on every 4-6 spins on average. The theme might be similar to the popular Wolf’s Gold, not least due to the full moon scatters, but this is no copycat game. In fact, it’s far from it, and paradoxically it’s one of the most interesting titles from this developer thus far, despite the rather ordinary looks.

What are the bonus features?

This game is mostly about the free spins bonus round we’ll get to very soon. However, there are a few neat little bonus features in the base game also. One of them will help you trigger the high potential bonus round. It’s simply called a Scatter Adder feature, and it will trigger at random times on any given base game spin.

You will then get between 2 and 4 full moon scatter symbols added to the reels, and 3 is enough to trigger the bonus round.

There are also wilds and multiplier wilds to benefit from in the base game, and the multipliers vary between 1x to 3x. The wilds themselves pay out decently also, and 5 on a payline gives you a 30x win without any multipliers involved. Should you get more than one wild multiplier involved in the same winning combo, the respective multipliers will multiply with each other for potentially solid payouts.

Free spins in Wolf Howl

As you’ve probably realized from the above, this game is all about getting enough scatters to trigger the free spins feature. You will get 8, 15 or 30 spins when you land 3, 4 or 5 full moon scatters respectively, and you need to land them all on the same spin, of course. This is where the fun really starts, as you will land even more scatters during the feature.

The scatters you land during the bonus round can help you retrigger the feature, and you get 2, 5, 8, 15 or 30 extra spins when you land 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 scatters on the same free spin, respectively. Another thing that makes the bonus round special is the Wild Call feature.

Simply put, all reel positions surrounding a full moon scatter will be transformed to 1x multiplier wilds. Any wilds that find themselves adjacent to the scatter will get a +1 increase of the multiplier. You can benefit from up to 5x multiplier wilds this way, depending on how many scatters you land.

The multiplier will be upgraded each time they are in the proximity of one or more scatters.

However, there is something more you need to know about this feature. The Wild Call feature will always be triggered after the win calculations have been made for any given free spin. Any new multiplier wilds (or upgraded ones) will therefore benefit you on future spins only, and not the current spin where they were created.

Unless you live in the UK (or any other jurisdiction where the buy feature is prohibited), you can opt to buy the free spins bonus round in Wolf Howl slot. You can get 8, 15 or 30 spins for the price of 90, 159 or 314 times your stake, respectively. This will also increase the game’s RTP from 96.15 % to 96.427 %.

How to play

Just For The Win has a recognizable game interface, but it does not really stick out too much from other modern interfaces. Experienced players will have no problem navigating the menus and settings, but we will run you through everything of importance here anyway.

The 3 dots icon on top of the stack opens up some important menus for you. You can toggle off/on the game sound via the speaker icon. Unfortunately, there is no way to only turn off the background music and keep the sound effects. Click the gear icon to get into the game settings, where you can turn on the quick spin feature if you want to increase the game pace.

We usually go with this option, and it makes this game flow more niceley. The star icon with a dollar sign in the middle takes you into the game's paytable. Here you can scroll down to read all about the different bonus features. Further down, you’ll find the actual paytable and the symbol values will reflect your current chosen bet level.

Scrolling all the way to the bottom, you’ll find a visual presentation of the 10 paylines in this game.

When you’re satisfied with the paytable info section, and have soaked up all the necessary info, you can close the menu again via the X. The time has come to choose your bet level between 10p and £10 per spin. This is quite a narrow bet range, that don’t really cater to high rollers or even medium level gamblers.

This is done via the chip icon by the way, and you’ll find that one right above the big circular spin button. The autoplay feature is found right above that again, and you can choose between 10 and 100 autospins via the circular arrows icon. No extras or advanced options are available to stop the feature, but it can always be stopped manually by a mouse click.

Where to play Wolf Howl?

At the time of writing this review, Wolf Howl has not yet had its wide release. We don’t know exactly how many casinos will take in this game, but usually you will have more than 150 operators to choose from when a new JFTW game hits the market. There should be something for everyone in other words, and here we’ll present you with some options for where to play this game.

The 200 Spins Wolf Howl Experience

We knew from the get-go that the base game would be a bit of a grind in this game, and that the buy feature button would get more and more tempting as we went along with our 200 spins journey. However, we decided to still test out the base game for a while with the highest possible bet level of €10 per spin. You only live once right, so why the heck not.

The gameplay scores an even 6 on our unofficial “oddly satisfying” gameplay scale (where 10 means you hardly care about winning or losing, and 1 means you’re getting a stomach ache). With the fast play switched on the tempo is quite decent, and there are not really any too annoying delays or hiccups in the flow of the game.

We had mostly smaller wins in our base game grind, but we powered through as many spins as we could be bothered with before we decided to finally buy the bonus feature. This is what the game is all about anyway, and we were definitely eager to see where it would take us. We went for the 8 free spins option, and this set us back €900 with the max bet level of £10 per spin.

The 8 spins option comes with 3 scatters on the reelstrips, and these can land on reels 2, 3 and 4 only. Any multiplier wilds that are created will remain on the reelstrips for the duration of the bonus round. However, as mentioned before, all the wilds and multiplier wilds created by the scatters will only benefit you on future spins, which was a bit confusing when we first experienced it.

Anyway, we saw a lot of wild and multiplier wilds being created in the beginning of our bonus round, and we also got plenty of extra free spins. We had our first win via these wilds on the 5th spin, however, and we were already up to 9 extra spins already. Moon scatters stopped landing for a while, but towards the end they helped stretch the feature out to a total of 23 spins. We won 35x our stake all in all, which barely recuperated 1/3 of our “investment”.

Review Summary

A while back Just For The Win released some high volatility titles with a disappointing and mediocre max win potential. We criticized them for this obvious flaw, and since then they have upped their game considerably. The 25,000x potential in Wolf Howl, however, far exceeded any expectations we had towards this Microgaming partner. It clearly demonstrates that this relatively fresh developer refuses to be boxed in, and it also helps make this game one of the most attractive wolf themed titles out there.

The base game is a bit of a grind at times, but you can land decent wins via the multiplying multipliers. The buy feature is a bit expensive in our view, but the bonus round can come with plenty of action via the multiplier wild transformation feature. We got plenty of extra spins also, when we tested the game, so the free spins round can definitely last longer than you might expect.

Pros

  • Base game multiplying multiplier wilds
  • Random scatter add feature (2 to 4 scatters)
  • Free spins with progressive multiplier wilds
  • High volatility and 25,000x max win potential

Cons

  • Visually, the game looks a bit dated and unimpressive
  • Max bet of £10 per spin is a bit low for high rollers

Below we have handpicked some games for you, that we believe you will enjoy if you liked what Wolf Howl slot has to offer. Wolf Gold - is among the most popular wolf themed slots to date, and time will tell if Wolf Howl can dethrone it. If you’re looking for a more rounded and less volatile gaming experience that still retains a decent potential, look no further. Wolf Gold can pay out up to 5,000x your stake, and the game comes with both respins, bonus rounds and a mega jackpot that can literally change your life.

Coywolf Cash - comes with a nice shamanic drums soundtrack, and it’s all about the mystery of native american culture. The bonus round comes with a horizontal wild reel, and you can win up to 4,000x your stake via the expanding multiplier wilds that can land with up to 7x attached. A somewhat different wolf game, with a different kind of hybrid wolf.

Spinsane - is something as rare as a NetEnt game that looks about as dated as the game at hand, but it was released in 2019, believe it or not. It has the classic look of a one-armed bandit, and wins up to 5,000x your stake is possible. These can come via the Super Symbols that are worth 10x as much as the regular ones. A highly unusual release from the swedish master, but well worth checking as a rarity.
