Mayan Blocks Review

The first thing that struck us when testing this game was how easy it was to distinguish the symbols from each other, even on a smaller mobile screen. Mayan Blocks might come with an overused theme, but at least it’s nicely done with an impressive soundtrack to boot. The features are hardly innovative, but this is the first fully fledged Cluster Pays grid slot from this developer.

Granted, they have the obscure, asian-themed Cluster Pays slot from 2018 called Pixel Samurai, but this far more mainstream friendly release comes with a lot more features. It’s all about increasing the unlimited win multiplier as much as possible, and Mega Symbols and Mystery Wilds will sometimes come in handy. The 10,000x potential is solid enough, but the 95.36 % RTP is a bit under par.

Rainbow Riches RTP (Return to Player) falls a little below the average, but it’s still a decent return. Most slots out there will have an RTP around 96%.

As you might expect from a Cluster Pays grid slot, the Collapsing Reels feature is central to the gameplay. Winning clusters are removed from the grid, and a fresh batch of symbols will then drop from above to fill the gaps.

This process repeats as long as you keep winning, and each consecutive cascade also increases the progressive win multiplier by +1. The multiplier resets between rounds in the base game.

To help you land winning clusters, you will sometimes land 2x2 and 3x3 Mega Symbols, and these count as 4 or 9 regular symbols, respectively. In addition, you have the Mystery Random Wild feature, and these can come into play at the end of a cascading/collapsing sequence. Regular wilds can also land, and these step in for all regular pay symbols.

You trigger the Bonus Round when you land 4 crystal scatters anywhere in sight in the same cascading sequence. You start out with 8 free spins, and each new crystal scatter you land awards 1 extra spin to your tally.

The big difference from the base game, is that the progressive win multiplier does not reset between spins.

The Multiplier Boost Spin feature is triggered at the end of the bonus round. This can land you a total winnings multiplier boost up to 20x. It’s a nice touch that will keep you on your toes until the end, and it allows you to leave the feature with a bang.

Review Summary

Playtech is perhaps not the most prolific grid slot developer out there, but they have some decent ventures in that regard. A lot of things have been done right with Mayan Blocks, and we like how the colorful symbols are so easy to distinguish. This is not always the case with these types of games, and it’s nice to be able to keep a good overview while playing.

The Collapsing Reel progressive multiplier is at the core of things, while Mega Symbols and Mystery Wilds will sometimes step up to prolong your winning streak. It all comes to a head in the ‘multiplier boost spin’ at the end of the bonus round, as up to a 20x total win multiplier can literally make or break your session.

It’s a simple game all in all, really, but it offers a solid 10,000x potential with a rounded medium to high volatility.
