Defenders of the Realm Review

High 5 Games never stops surprising us with their unusual oddball releases. With Defenders of the Realm, they’ve somehow managed to mix together what looks like a desert city from Stargate with a viking gods theme sporting psychedelic colors. It all works out somehow, even though the high strangeness of it all might turn off some players.

The colorful Beat Boxes takes center stage most of the time, as these are key to both 2x wins and Locked Wild Reels. The Pick Bonus Game comes with between 4 and 6 tiers, and it can award decent payouts if you manage to climb up a few levels. The big highlight is the bonus round however, but overall this game is not convincing enough to attract mainstream success.

The wild symbol steps in for all regular symbols like it usually does, and it’s also the highest paying symbol by far in this game. Land 5 wilds on a payline, and you win 100x your stake. You will also land special Horn symbols here, and these frame reel positions with a different color for each reel.

This is called the Beat Box feature, and any win where at least one symbol is framed by a Beat Box will double your payout. All Beat Boxes included in a winning combo will disappear before the next spin, unless certain conditions are met.

If all 4 reel positions on a reel are framed by a Beat Box, it will transform into a wild reel for the next 3 spins. A horn symbol can replace beat boxes to make this happen also, and the wild reel shifts color from green to yellow to red on the final spin, kind of like a traffic light. All Beat Boxes are removed after the Wild Reel feature has played out.

Landing at least 3 treasure chests scatters anywhere on a base game spin triggers the Pick Bonus Game. The bonus game comes with different tiers, as follows:

• 3 treasure chests triggers the 4-tiered bonus game.
• 4 treasure chests triggers the 5-tiered bonus game.
• 5 treasure chests triggers the 6-tiered bonus game.

Each tier comes with 4 options for you to pick from, and you will pick until you level-up or the feature ends. You will reveal a cash prize or you will advance to the next tier with every pick, except for the 4th and final pick.

Here you will either end the feature by revealing a cross, or double your winnings by picking a 2x multiplier.

The cash prizes become more lucrative for each tier, and picking the multiplier means you advance to the next tier.

All reels that have been activated at least once via the Locked Wild Reels feature, are distinguishable by their respective color shimmering in the background. When all 5 reels have been activated like this, you trigger the bonus round.

You are granted 10 free spins, and there is no way to retrigger the feature or get extra spins. You will benefit from at least 1 randomly placed wild reel on each spin though, and some of the wild reels you land can also come with a 2x multiplier.

There is quite a lot going on in this game, so the gameplay can be a bit confusing at first. We triggered both the Pick Bonus Game and the bonus round in our 200 spins test session, and we also got plenty of Locked Wild Reels. Review Summary

High 5 Games has established a unique visual style for their games, and this is very much the case also in Defenders of the Realm. The incongruent mix of futuristic arabian architecture, viking/gods and psychedelic colors is not something we’ve seen before. Rumors are the vikings tripped out on certain mushrooms, and it seems like the designers have gone a bit “berzerk” themselves with this game.

There is always plenty going on here, due to all the different color Beat Boxes. You will trigger wild reels on a regular basis, and it’s all bound to feel a bit overwhelming at first.

The Pick Bonus Game doesn’t offer all that much excitement, but the bonus round with guaranteed wild reels has its moments. Not least if you get lucky with the 2x multiplier wild reel, which can lead to payouts up to 4,237x your stake.
