Apparently, the secret agent’s name is Max Megaways, and he’s on a mission that takes him into the mountain headquarters of the arch-villain Dr Fudge Indare. Neither of the characters are found on the reels though, as you get the generic gemstone symbols that Big Time Gaming has become so fond of. The game seems inspired by the old, classic James Bond movies, and the dynamic base game grid is placed outside the mountain entrance.

We have to say that more could’ve been done with the secret agent theme, and we hope it will be in the next two installments. What lifts this game way above the run-of-the-mill Megaways releases is the numerous modifiers. You get 4 different ones in the base game, and a pick of 2 or 3 of 5 possible modifiers in the bonus round. The premium gemstone symbols pay between 0.6 and 5 x your stake for 6 of a kind wins, and you also have Wild symbols that step in for pay symbols to help complete wins. The wilds appear only on the top horizontal reel though, unless they are generated by modifiers.

Winning symbols are removed via the Reactions mechanic, and the empty positions are filled with new and/or existing symbols. The process repeats as long as you keep winning.

You get different modifiers that can trigger at any given time in the base game, and here’s an overview:

• Horizontal Wild - turns the whole top reel wild.

You get 10 free spins when you land 3 gold scatters anywhere in view, and +2 extra spins on top of that for each extra triggering scatter. If one of the triggering scatters is a diamond Megascatter, you get the Enhanced Bonus round. Megascatters appear on reel 6 only, while regular gold scatters can land on reels 1 to 5 in the base game.

You get a pick and click game before the bonus round plays out, and this awards 2 or 3 modifiers for the feature (3 for the enhanced round only). Here’s an overview of the modifiers you can get:

• Double Multiplier - increments the win multiplier by +2 per reaction win.
• Duplicating Wilds - upgrade wilds so any symbol below also becomes wild.
• 2 Scatter Retrigger - gives you extra spins when 2+ scatters land.
• Increased Ways - upgrades the reels to land with at least 5 positions each.
• No Lower Symbols - removes the 9, 10 and J symbol for the duration of the feature.

The bonus round multiplier starts at x1, and it increases by +1 per reaction win by default.

Scatters can land on the top reel only, and you win +4 extra spins when you land 3 scatters by default. You also get +4 extra spins on top of that for each extra retriggering scatter above the minimum of 3.

The Bonus Buy feature is available in some jurisdictions, but not in the UK for sure. If available, you can purchase the regular bonus round for 75x the stake, which gives you 2 modifier picks. The enhanced bonus round costs 200x your stake, and gives you 3 modifier picks. The RTP is 96.37 % no matter which version of the feature you buy.

The Win Exchange feature gives you 2 options as well, and any win of 100x your stake, or more, can be exchanged for 10 free spins. You can also gamble any winnings between 25 and 100 x your stake to win 10 free spins.

Review Summary

The inventor of the Megaways engine knows how to make a solid dynamic reels game, there’s no question about that. However, we don’t get why Big Time Gaming keeps insisting on the glossy gemstone symbols in so many cases, and especially in a game like this.

Why not include the secret agent and the villain as symbols, and throw in a shaken-not-stirred Martini and some weapons as well. Generic gemstones gets the job done, but it’s hardly as engaging as it could have been.

That being said, Max Megaways is a rock solid release when it comes to the features and the overall math model. The reactions and the modifiers keep the base game interesting, as you keep wondering when you’ll get to see the inside of the villain’s mountain headquarters. Each bonus round plays out differently due to the different modifier combo, and the 139,200x potential lands this game in the top max win spot for Megaways releases.
