For those not well-versed in the world of car racing, a “hot rod” is an older automobile that’s been upgraded and modified to be a racing car. You get plenty of examples in this Relax Gaming release, of course, but Hot Rod Racers didn’t overly impress us in the visual department. The presentation gets the job done though, but what’s under the hood made a better and more lasting impression.

Everything revolves around the Wheelspin Wild feature, which takes center stage in both bonus round tiers, as well as in the base game. It’s basically a wild transformation feature that can also create multiplier wilds, and Wheelspin wilds are sticky in both bonus round tiers. The super version comes with upgradable and persistent multiplier positions as well, and it can lead to solid payouts up to 25,000x your stake.

The premium car symbols pay between 5 and 10 x your stake for 5 of a kind wins, and you can land Wheelspin Wilds on reels 2 to 5. The wilds step in for pay symbols to help complete wins, and they also turn all car symbols to the left on the same reel into wilds. Wilds and transformed car wilds are upgraded with +1 added to the multiplier if they are affected by another Wheelspin Wild, and 5 wilds on a payline pays 20x your stake.

You need 3 scatters on the 3 middle reels to trigger the Bonus Round, and this awards 10 free spins.

All Wheelspin Wilds that land during the feature become sticky for the duration of the bonus round, triggering their wild transformation modifier whenever they can.

We have seen better visuals from Relax Gaming for sure, but Hot Rod Racers comes with a retro charm nonetheless. The pyro effect you get from the exhaust pipe reel frame is admittedly kind of neat, but there is still a low-budget vibe hanging over this production. This is not really a deal-breaker in our opinion, and not least since the features can turbo charge your winnings out of the blue.

The Wheelspin Wild multiplier position upgrade system looks cool when it plays out, and it can also be highly effective on a good day. This is not least the case in the Super version of the bonus round, although things can escalate plenty in the regular feature as well. Massive single spin payouts can be landed, and the win cap of 25,000x seems achievable enough. Overall, Hot Rod Racers is well worth checking out, and with better visuals it could’ve been an instant classic.
