Freeway 7 Review

Once again ELK invites you onto a mysterious “lost highway” that’s presumably located somewhere in the Midwest of the United States. You will have no idea where Freeway 7 is taking you, but you are undoubtedly going there fast. You need to buckle up for yet another high-octane adventure in the 3-reels Classic Series in other words, and the bonus round is the big difference from the previous Route 777.

The visuals have changed as well as the scenery, and you get some fun cop animations on the big screen above the 3x3 grid. The Road Block Nudge Respins feature is very similar to what you get in Route 777, but the bonus round comes with an extra spins and multiplier upgrade system that’s brand new. The 5,000x potential is a tad higher, but we imagine the reduced 94 % RTP is south of the dealbreaker border for some players.

Freeway 7 Slot Features

Only 3 of a kind wins are possible, and the classic-looking symbols pay between 0.5 and 7.5 x your stake for that feat. You can also land a wild symbol that steps in for pay symbols to help complete wins, and the wild holds no value of its own in this game.

The Road Block Nudge Respins feature triggers when you land matching symbol configurations on reels 1 and 3, and you get 5 respins. The middle reel spins like normal per respin, while reels 1 and 3 nudge one position down per respin.

If you get a bonus symbol on reels 1 and/or 3, the symbol is nudged towards the center and the reel becomes locked.

You need 3 bonus symbols in view to trigger the Bonus Round, and the Super version is triggered if the super bonus symbol lands on the middle reel instead of a regular bonus symbol. The bonus round starts immediately if this happens during the Road Block Nudge Respins round, but you get the remaining respins after the bonus round has played out.

All wins give you extra spins during the bonus round, and you get 5 free spins for starters. All symbols are activated as the feature starts, which means that any win increases the win multiplier. Winning symbols are deactivated though, so they cannot be used for that purpose more than one time.

If you retrigger the bonus round by landing 3 bonus symbols however, all symbols become activated again. You can upgrade to the Super Bonus Round via the retrigger feature as well, and it comes with a higher starting multiplier and overall multiplier upgrade values.

Each win always increases the multiplier in the super version, as symbols are never deactivated.

You can trigger the Road Block Nudge Respins feature during either of the bonus round tiers as well, and you then get 5 respins that don’t subtract from the free spins tally. Wins during respins awards extra free spins, and if the symbols are active they also increase the win multiplier. If you trigger either of the bonus rounds together with the Road Block Nudge Respins round, the bonus round plays out first.

The X-iter Feature Buy menu is available in some jurisdictions, but not in the UK for sure. It comes with 5 options this time, and these are as follows:

  • Bonus Hunt - pay 2x your stake to double your bonus round chances.
  • Chili Spins - pay 10x your stake to get a spin with only sevens, cherries, wilds, bonus and/or super bonus symbols.
  • Road Block Nudge - pay 25x your stake to get the respins feature.
  • Bonus - pay 100x your stake to get the bonus round.
  • Super Bonus - pay 500x your stake to get the super bonus round.

The 200 Spins Freeway 7 Slot Experience

You get to see mostly dead spins in the base game, with a few smaller wins sprinkled in for good measure. You can therefore safely skip to 1:17 into the 9:33 minute highlights video, as this is where we trigger the Super Bonus Round. As you understand, the feature goes on for a good while, and you’ll get a pretty good handle on what this game is about by hitting the play button below.

Review Summary

It’s hard to not see Freeway 7 as a sequel to Route 777, but it’s also an installment in ELK’s ongoing Classic Series. If you enjoy this ‘3-reelers with a twist’ range, and especially if you liked the fast-paced highway action from the predecessor, you will most likely also enjoy what’s on offer in this release. Beware, however, that the RTP has been reduced from a decent 96.3 % in the first game, to a deal-breakingly low 94 % this time.

At some point players will put their foot down, and ELK would be better off just implementing RTP ranges like so many other developers.

Freeway 7 Slot Gameplay 1961

As for the gameplay, the nudge respins round is decent, but you’ll need the bonus round multiplier to truly do damage. The super version is far more lucrative in that regard, but it probably doesn't come about all that often. The 5,000x potential beats the 4,000x you get in the first highway game, but it’s hardly enough to compensate for such low theoretical returns.

Pros

  • Road Block Nudge Respins feature
  • FS and Super FS w/ multiplier increase
  • X-iter Feature Buy menu (not UK)
  • Win up to 5,000x your stake

Cons

  • 94 % RTP is dealbreaker territory

If you enjoy Freeway 7 Slot you should also try:

Route 777 - is ELK’s previous highway-themed release in the Classic Series, and it comes with a similar Overtake Respins feature where reels 1 and 3 nudge down as the middle reel respins. The main attraction is the bonus round, and it comes with a possible fortune wheel for payouts up to 4,000x your stake.

Toro 7s - is another installment in ELK’s Classic Series, and it’s also part of their famous bullfighting range. It comes with sticky multiplier wild respins with nudging wilds, and you get 2 different bonus rounds for payouts up to 10,000x your stake.

Mad Cars - is a high-octane Push Gaming release set in a post apocalyptic world, and it’s all about car racing to the death. Cars dash across the screen to land you upgradable prizes, and the bonus round is one big car race mayhem for payouts up to 25,000x your stake.
