We have no doubt that pirates were both heavy drinkers and big gamblers, but the game of Blackjack wasn’t really invented at the time we presume Just For The Win’s latest swashbuckling adventure is set. The blackbearded captain looks kind of cool with the 2 playing cards in his hat though, and the diamond on his eye-patch is a nice touch too, so the anachronism is easy to forgive.

The game plays out in some kind of harbor setting, with a female pirate dangling on the right-hand side with her saber drawn. You can see the 4 fixed Kraken Jackpots on the left-hand side, and the Kraken Wheel is also visible above the 5x3 grid. The reels are filled with pirate characters that look anything from cute to deranged, and it’s kind of fun to pick extra features up front when the bonus round triggers.

The 4 lower-value pirate object symbols pay between 2.5 and 4 x your stake for 5 of a kind wins, while the 4 character premiums pay between 5 and 20 x your stake for the same. The Treasure Map Wild can appear anywhere to help complete winning combinations, and it holds the same value as the top-tier Captain Blackjack symbol.

Kraken Coins land on a regular basis, and these are collected in the Kraken Wheel seen above the regular grid. Each time a coin is collected there is a chance you’ll get a spin on the Kraken Wheel, and this guarantees 1 of the 4 jackpots. These are the Mini, Minor, Major and Mega jackpots, worth 15x, 40x, 250x and 5,000x your stake, respectively.

The Kraken Wheel can only trigger from the base game.

You need at least 3 skull & bones scatters anywhere in view to trigger the Bonus Round, and this awards 6 free spins. Landing more than 3 scatters awards extra up-front feature picks, and 3, 4 or 5 scatters gives you 3, 4 or 5 feature picks, respectively. You’ll pick from 9 treasure chests before the bonus round starts, and these award the following:

• Extra spins - gives you 3, 4, 5, 6 or 9 extra free spins.
• Multiplier - adds +1, +2 or +3 to the global win multiplier.

Review Summary

We’ve certainly seen similar releases from Just For The Win before, but Adventures of Captain Blackjack is not a copycat effort. Still, it kind of feels like eating at a chain restaurant, but it’s not uncommon for developers to have a “baseline” they fall back to in times when the creative juices are not overflowing. Not the most exciting start to the new year perhaps, but this is still a decent release if you can look past the run-of-the-mill vibe.

The Kraken Wheel keeps you motivated when churning along in the base game, and the 5,000x top prize is certainly decent enough. You can land 5,000x in the bonus round as well, but you will probably need the somewhat hard to get multiplier upgrade to get close. It maxes out at x7, which means that 2,800x your stake is the single spin max win during the feature. Overall, an okay shelf-filler release that doesn’t really show JFTW from their most innovative side.
